Plant Information
Natural Habitat Most species in this genus are native to South America but are widely distributed through warmer countries.
This Specimen Found: I found this lovely old fashioned plant when I was looking after a neighbour's garden and was attracted to the delicate crêpe - like texture of the petals and the shape of the flower. Finding it difficult to represent the sprawling nature of the plant's growth habits I decided to paint three small sections.
There are 100 or more species of evergreen shrubs in this genus but only a few truly merit the name ‘Chinese lantern' i.e. having pendant flowers on weak stalks comprising an inflated calyx above a bell of 5 overlapping petals.
